Have you ever picked up a jar in the skincare aisle that promised to "boost collagen," "erase wrinkles," and make you look years younger โ and thought: can this tiny bottle actually do all of that?
Same. And as your skincare bestie, I'm always going to give you the honest answer โ even when it's not what the beauty ads want you to hear. So grab your coffee. Let's talk about what collagen creams can actually do, what they can't, and what genuinely helps support healthy glowing skin as we get older.
โ Coffee Chat
Can I tell you something a little embarrassing? There was a stretch of time โ probably my mid-30s โ where I genuinely believed every product that promised to "reverse aging." If the label said it could erase wrinkles or tighten my skin, I wanted to believe it. And I spent a lot of money on a lot of jars that didn't do what they promised.
Eventually I noticed something: the products that actually made a difference weren't the ones making the biggest claims. They were the simple ones I used consistently, every single day, without thinking twice.
That realization completely changed how I think about skincare โ and it's the whole reason I started Sunlit. Not to sell you miracle promises. To give you the real information and the simple products that actually do something.
What Is Collagen โ And What Happens to It as We Age?
Collagen is the most abundant protein in your body. Think of it like the scaffolding that gives your skin its structure, firmness, and elasticity. When we're younger our bodies produce plenty of it naturally. As we get older that production gradually slows โ and that's completely normal. It's one of the reasons we start noticing fine lines, skin that doesn't feel quite as firm, and a little less bounce than we used to have.
None of that means your skin is "bad" or that something has gone wrong. It just means your skin has different needs than it did ten or twenty years ago. And understanding those needs is way more powerful than chasing any miracle cream.
The science behind this: Dermatologists refer to this as the "500 Dalton Rule" โ research shows that molecules larger than 500 daltons cannot penetrate the skin barrier. A standard collagen molecule weighs approximately 300,000 daltons โ roughly 600 times too large to reach the dermis where collagen is actually made. (Bos & Meinardi, Experimental Dermatology, 2000)
โจ Did You Know?
Your daily habits influence how well you support the collagen you already have.
You're not trying to stop time. You're helping your skin thrive through every season of life.
So What Actually Helps Support Healthy-Looking Skin?
Here's where things get exciting. Instead of chasing miracle claims, there are ingredients with a genuinely strong track record โ ones that earn their place in a simple routine because they consistently deliver. These are the ones I use every day and the ones I built Sunlit around.
Why Consistency Matters More Than Any Single Product
One expensive cream isn't going to transform your skin overnight. But five intentional minutes every morning? That adds up โ dramatically โ over weeks and months. Healthy-looking skin isn't built in a weekend. It's built through small habits done consistently by a woman who decided she was worth showing up for.
That's the whole reason I created Sunlit products the way I did. Not to add more complexity to your already full day. To give you something simple enough that you'll actually do it โ and effective enough that it's worth doing.
โ๏ธ Your 2-Minute Skin Check
Tonight after you wash your face, take a moment and ask yourself:
Does my skin feel tight and uncomfortable โ or soft and balanced?
Do fine lines look more noticeable when my skin feels dry or dehydrated?
Am I wearing SPF every day โ or just when I remember?
Am I buying products because of big promises โ or because they have ingredients that actually do something?
Is my routine simple enough that I actually do it every single day?
Sometimes the answers are simpler than we think. And simpler is almost always better.
