The 5 Ingredients That Actually Support Healthy Aging Skin
Not the 30-ingredient list. The handful that actually have real evidence behind them, what each one does, and how to use them without overcomplicating everything.
There's a real gap between what skincare marketing claims and what the research actually supports. These five ingredients are the ones where dermatologists and the clinical evidence genuinely agree β everything else is either unproven, overhyped, or just a supporting player.
1. Broad-Spectrum SPF
The single highest-impact thing on this list
What it does: UV exposure is the biggest driver of visible skin aging β more than any single ingredient can undo. Sunscreen doesn't reverse damage, but it prevents the ongoing collagen breakdown and pigment changes that cause most of what we call "aging" in the first place.
How to use it: Daily, rain or shine, indoors-near-windows included. A mineral formula (zinc oxide or titanium dioxide) is a good default if you're not sure which to pick.
Honest note: we don't currently make an SPF, so there's no product tie-in here β just genuinely the most important thing on this whole list, wherever you get it.
2. Retinoids (or Bakuchiol, if you want a gentler option)
The gold standard for cell turnover and firmness
What it does: Retinoids speed up cell turnover and support collagen production β this is the ingredient category with the deepest, longest-standing research behind it for fine lines and firmness. Bakuchiol works through a different pathway but has been shown in clinical research to produce comparable results with less irritation, which makes it a solid option for more reactive skin.
How to use it: Start slow β 2-3 nights a week, always at night, always paired with SPF the next morning. Expect 8-12 weeks before you see real change; this isn't a fast ingredient.
Our Wrinkle Recovery Serum uses bakuchiol alongside a gentle touch of Vitamin A, for firmness support without the harshness of a straight retinol routine.
3. Vitamin C
Antioxidant protection and brightening
What it does: A well-studied antioxidant that helps neutralize free-radical damage from UV and pollution exposure, while also supporting collagen production and fading dark spots and uneven tone over time.
How to use it: Morning, before SPF β this is when it does the most protective work. It plays well with most other ingredients, so it's an easy one to build a routine around.
Our Vitamin C Serum is built around this exact idea β one job, done well, in the morning routine.
4. Peptides
Supportive firmness, gentler than actives
What they do: Peptides are small chains of amino acids that signal skin to support its own collagen production. They're not as dramatic as retinoids on their own, but they're extremely well-tolerated and work well layered alongside other actives rather than competing with them.
How to use them: Morning or night, no real downside to daily use β this is one of the gentlest ingredients on this list.
Our Hydrating Face Moisturizer includes a peptide (Acetyl Hexapeptide-37) alongside its hydrating base β a quiet supporting player doing real work.
5. Hyaluronic Acid
The hydration ingredient everything else depends on
What it does: A humectant that can hold many times its weight in water, pulling moisture into the skin's surface. Well-hydrated skin looks plumper and finer lines are less visible β and a well-hydrated barrier is also what lets the other ingredients on this list actually do their job without irritation.
How to use it: On slightly damp skin, then seal it in with a moisturizer right after β applied to fully dry skin, it can actually pull moisture out of the deeper layers instead of in.
You'll find this in several of our formulas, since it's the foundation nearly everything else builds on.
π§ͺ How to Actually Combine These (Without Overdoing It)
βοΈ Morning
Hyaluronic acid (on damp skin) β Vitamin C β Peptides β SPF
π Evening
Hyaluronic acid (on damp skin) β Retinoid or bakuchiol β moisturizer to seal it in
You don't need all five products from five different brands. Several of these ingredients are often combined in a single formula β the goal is covering the categories, not owning every ingredient separately.
β Quick Questions
Do I need all 5 at once?
No β if you're just starting out, SPF and a hydrating moisturizer alone will do more than any single "advanced" active. Add retinoid/bakuchiol and Vitamin C once that foundation feels solid.
What about niacinamide? I see that mentioned everywhere too.
Niacinamide is genuinely excellent β well-tolerated, supports the barrier, helps with redness and tone. It didn't make the top 5 here only because it's more of a supporting, "plays well with everything" ingredient than one of the five with the deepest standalone evidence for aging specifically. It's a great add once you've got these five in place.
How long before I see a difference?
Hydration ingredients (hyaluronic acid, peptides) show visible improvement fastest β often within days. Vitamin C and retinoids/bakuchiol are slower builds, typically 8-12 weeks of consistent use before real change shows. SPF's benefit is entirely about prevention, so there's nothing to "see" β it's working even when you can't tell.
Where to Start
If you're building this from scratch, start with hydration and SPF, then layer in Vitamin C and a bakuchiol-based retinol alternative once that foundation feels steady. Every Sunlit product is built around these same evidence-backed categories β simple, effective ingredients, nothing extra.
